The past few days has seen a dramatic changing of the guard on the beach at Baltray, signalling the end of summer will soon be upon us. Many of the Little Terns have already started moving along the Irish coast, with only the 20 youngest chicks and their parents remaining.  However the beach is now home to huge loafing flocks of the larger tern species. Mixed flocks of Common, Artic and Sandwich Terns regularly containing over 700 individuals can be seen along sandbars and ranging along the tide line resting with their fledged offspring. Migratory waders have also been returning in huge numbers to over-winter here, with flocks of over 3000 Dunlin, 200 Sanderling along with 600 migratory Ringed Plovers joining our residents for the winter.

The terning of the seasons is truly upon us!
